The Bottle Cap Lady

The Bottle Cap Lady, a mysteriously troubled former waitress at The Chicken Place restaurant, had served up more Deluxe Chicken Dinners than anyone else in a single evening. When she lost her job, she turned her attention towards Pearl, a small and curious white hen who resembles the chicken statue on top of the restaurant. Little does The Bottle Cap Lady know there is a Christmas gift only Pearl can give her, but will The Bottle Cap Lady let her give that gift or will she turn Pearl into a Christmas dinner before she even has a chance?

This is the unillustrated version of “How To Explain Christmas To Chickens” and is placed in the Adult Fiction section. The basic text for both books is the same, only the preface, introduction, and epilogue are slightly different since this version has no illustrations.

How To Explain Christmas To Chickens

Pearl loves being a chicken and being a comedian. Blanche was her best friend ever and reassured her that she just had a “heaping helping of what makes a chicken a chicken.”

Blanche even taught her how to lay an egg and the very important lesson that “Laying an egg is about giving. Light and Life and Love are about giving too.” She only hoped Pearl would remember this when it really mattered.

When Blanche becomes sick and dies, Pearl’s heaping helping of curiosity leads her to explore her neighborhood in search of answers about Christmas. The Bottle Cap Lady has the most Christmas lights and decorations, and so she must know more about Christmas than anyone.

Pearl discovers there is a Christmas gift only she can give, but it will mean giving up her own Christmas gifts from Santa Claus. Will she remember the valuable lessons she learned from Blanche about giving?

About The Author

John Spiers is a writer, artist, and “dad” to a small flock of chickens who live in the center of his backyard garden.

While he often produced small writing and drawing project over the years, he never found his creative niche until he decided to raise some baby chicks. They became the characters in his stories and the subjects of his drawings. Now they are his friends, and he spends time with them each evening under the shade of the camellias bordering his backyard garden.

His stories occur in the intersection where the world of people meets the world of chickens. It is an intersection where the unexpected can happen. Chickens can talk with people who truly love them. They can also dance ballet and even put on backyard comedy shows.

His work seeks to share the same joy he feels with his chickens along with bits of timeless “chicken wisdom” about life which he has learned from them.
